Transform Your Front Door: Rustic Style

Are you looking for a way to update your front entrance this year? Here are a few suggestions to add curb appeal and a breath of fresh air by utilizing krosswood rustic knotty alder doors, a bit of paint, new lighting, and creative planters. With a little bit of planning, some elbow grease, and a few warm days you’ll have a brand new look to your entryway.

Elements of Rustic Style

Rustic style combines elements of early American and folk decor along with vintage furniture and very simplistic items, typically repurposed tools. These elements can be combined in a front entryway to create a look that is warm, welcoming, and whimsical. Some of the elements to include will be:

  • Vintage and Antique Items

  • Muted and Distressed Colors

  • Simple Shapes

  • Rough Textures

Step One: The Door

We’ll start off the transformation with a new door that has the look of a rough hewn door, but with the high quality and beauty of modern craftsmanship. The Krosswood Knotty Alder doors from UberDoors are a beautiful option for a rustic look.

Step Two: Lighting

Lighting around the front door has a large impact on how welcoming the area appears. For a rustic look consider sconces that recreate the bygone era of oil lamps or candles, or even a repurposed farm or kitchen item such as a canning jar or brooder lamp could be used to bring the vintage or antique element.

Step Three: Seating

Some people have wide front porches that they take advantage of with porch swings and deck chairs, but even a small front step can benefit from a place to sit down. Two chairs or a settee placed near the front door can provide an lovely outdoor space where a homeowner can visit with friends, a spot to sit and remove running shoes or rain boots, or a comfortable reading place. For a rustic look consider going with an old-fashioned Adirondack style chair in a muted or distressed color.

Step Four: Layered Collectibles and Plants

One of the funnest aspects of a rustic style is the opportunity to create decorative “layers” in your entryway space. Start your layers with a conversation piece item; an old window, ladder, a vintage, rusted bicycle, or another item that will be around half the height of your door. After this tallest layer add colored ceramic or repurposed metal planters full of greenery. Flowering plants are good too, but green plants are a wonderful accent to the collectibles on your porch.

Step Five: Signage

Front entry signs can range from simple house numbers to statements that tell something about the people that live inside. For a rustic feel go for something with a simple shape and either an old-fashioned font, a weathered base material, or words created out of an unusual item such as nails, barbed wire, or carved wood.
