Your Spring Cleaning Checklist

Yay! It’s officially Spring! The days are getting longer and warmer, and many of us are enjoying some fresh air for the first time in months. Spring brings more sunshine and warmer temperatures, and for many people, spring cleaning their home allows them to enjoy the nice weather more.

Nobody likes spring cleaning, but we do enjoy the way our home feels when it’s clean. You can bring the outside in with sparkling windows and fresh smelling rooms.

Room by room spring cleaning

In preparation for doing some heavy duty spring cleaning, you should stock up on cleaning products and rags. You may want to ignore the areas that you recently cleaned so you have time to focus on the parts that you neglected for most of the winter.

Creating a playlist of uplifting music may help motivate you to get everything done. You may also want to convince your family to help you so it goes faster.

All Rooms

Wipe down the walls and baseboards of the accumulated grime and dust. In the kitchen, you should use a degreaser cleaner.

Wash the windows and blinds or curtains. You might be surprised at how much more light comes in when the windows are sparkling.

Shampoo carpets of the dirt that may have gotten tracked inside over the winter, and scrub the wood, linoleum, or tile floors.

Kitchen

For many of us, the kitchen is used a lot, but there is some deep cleaning that is difficult to do when the weather is cold.

Clean the inside of your oven. If it’s self-cleaning, you probably want to have the windows open to vent the smell of burning crumbs (or whatever might have spilled in your oven). Pull the oven out from the wall and clean the sides. While you are at it, sweep behind the stove.

Clean the inside of your refrigerator, checking the expiration dates of your condiments. Purge anything you bought but never eat. Pull your fridge out from the wall and wipe down the sides, and then sweep the crumbs that fell behind the fridge.

Wipe down all of the surfaces in your kitchen: the sink, backsplash, counters, tables, and walls. Organize the cupboards and drawers and get rid of the things you don’t need.

Bedrooms

Switch out your toasty winter bedding in preparation for warmer weather. Make sure you wash your bedding before storing it for the summer. You can also take your pillows outside to freshen them up.

Pull your bed out from the wall and sweep or vacuum the floor. If you have a ceiling fan, get up on a ladder and wipe down the blades.

If you are feeling energetic, you can switch out your warm clothes for cooler attire. Pack up your sweaters and scarves and bring out the sandals, shorts, and sundresses. Donate the clothes that you no longer wear to a charity.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms can get grimy over the winter, so scrub it from top to bottom. Scrub the tub/shower, toilet, and counter. Get rid of the personal care items you no longer use.

Outside

Naturally, the outside of your house may be in rough shape after the winter, especially if it was in the elements. Now is the time to pull out your patio furniture (wipe it down to get rid of the dust). It’s also a good idea to clean your bar-b-que in readiness of nice weather.

Clean the outside of your windows and wipe down your doors.

Declutter

Everything seems to accumulate in the winter, so now is the time to get rid of the stuff you don’t need. Decluttering also allows you to organize your stuff so that you can spend less time looking for things and more time enjoying the spring weather.

Donate items that you no longer need to those who might. Recycle the rest.

You don’t have to do everything in one day. Break spring cleaning into smaller tasks and keep at it until it’s all done. You will be able to enjoy the warmer weather with a sparkling clean home.
