Home Security Tips

How to Protect your  Home

The easiest way to prepare your home for a robbery is to avoid it in the first place. That sounds obvious, but every day people make it easy for thieves to break into their homes. We rounded up some of our favorite ways to increase your home security.

Install a home security system

One of the easiest ways to secure your home is with a home security system. Purchase a system that is monitored and that makes a loud noise and alerts the police when breached.

You can also have a dog that barks when someone unfamiliar comes to the door; that often scares potential burglars away.

Ensure your home is well-lit

It’s no secret that burglars prefer a dark home. Have lights on near all doors, and consider installing motion sensor lights for the areas that are not used as often, such as your back yard.

Front Doors

Solid wood doors such as this one or solid metal doors such as this one are the most secure. A deadbolt installed in your front door provides maximum protection for your home.

It’s also a good idea to change locks when you move into a new home in case anyone has copies of the old keys that they can use to let themselves into your home.

Other Entrances

Sliding patio doors are the easiest entry for someone looking to break into your home. Consider switching them for french doors that can lock more securely.

Don’t leave windows open while you are gone, especially the ones at the back of your house. It’s easy to get in through a window, even one that is only cracked open.

Trees and shrubs

Large trees that make your door secluded from the street should be trimmed back so that thieves can’t make themselves at home while they break into your house.

Tall trees that can be used to climb to a second-floor window should be cut down or the windows should be kept locked at all times.

You can also plant a thorny shrub below a window to make it difficult for someone to try to get to the window.

When you are away

Thieves like to target vacant homes, so make sure you don’t advertise your vacation plans on social media. Have someone cut your grass and bring the mail inside so that your house looks lived in. If it’s winter, have someone shovel the driveway and walkway. Also, don’t leave ladders in plain site.

Consider buying a light timer so that it looks like someone is at home.

You shouldn’t live your life anticipating a robbery, but it is a real possibility. Luckily, most burglars look for the easiest route when it comes to deciding who to rob. Don’t make it easy for them by following these simple tips.
