Sticky Door

This is probably the easiest fix of all. Most stickiness in a door is caused by buildup of dirt along the bottom door strip or in the hinges. First try cleaning the hinges with a good grease-cutting cleaner then move to the bottom door strip. Using warm water and a good, grease-cutting soap, clean all the nook and crannies of the bottom of the door, being careful to look for small pebbles, dirt build up in corners, or any other debris that may have accumulated to cause stickiness. Rinse the soap with warm water and a sponge and dry thoroughly. If the stickiness persists, you may need to carefully sand along the edges of the door until a clean fit is achieved.

Dents

Depending on what your door is made of you will need either wood putty or auto filler to repair a dent in your front door.

For your wood door find a wood putty that is tinted the same color as your door is stained. If you are in doubt about which color to choose it is usually best to go one shade darker rather than one lighter. Lightly sand the area which has been dented, removing any loose or chipped wood. Wipe away any dust. Follow the instructions on the putty bottle, being careful to not get stain on the rest of the door. Allow the putty to dry completely then sand smooth.

For a steel door you’ll need to sand the door down to the metal, removing all paint. Depending on how deep your dent is, you’ll apply either one small layer of filler, or several thin layers until the dent is filled. Follow the filler instructions and when it is dried completely, sand it smooth, paint with primer and then your color of choice.

Squeaky Hinges

Squeaky hinges are typically caused by a lack of lubrication in the hinge itself. Remove the pins from your hinges and scrub the pin, barrel, and hinge leaves with steel wool. Wipe clean and spray lightly with a silicone spray or high quality machine oil. Replace all of the pins and your door should swing squeak free.
These easy DIY repair tips can keep your front door operating smoothly for years to come.
