Design Tips for Renters

How to Personalize your Home even when you Rent it!

Living in a rented home can be difficult. Landlords have rules to keep the space easy to rent once you move out; you usually can’t paint or make any major changes, so you are stuck with builder’s beige walls and linoleum floors. Unless, that is, you utilize some simple design tips to add your own personality to your space.

But there are some things you can do as a renter to personalize your home and still get your damage deposit back! We have some design tips for renters that will add some style to your home.

Wallpaper

Removable wallpaper is a renter’s dream. Unlike regular wallpaper that comes with adhesive, removable wallpaper simply peels off of the wall, leaving no residue behind. Removable wallpaper comes in sheets or decals to create an interesting focal point in any room.

 Light Fixtures

Light fixtures in rental units can be awful, but even the least handy person can switch out a light fixture. If you aren’t comfortable with electrical work, you can probably get an electrician to do it for you for an inexpensive investment. Make sure you switch out the new one and reinstall the old one before you move.

Plants

Plants add texture to a room and they also bring in fresh air. Ensure you pick plants that are suitable for the amount of light you get in your home – don’t pick a light loving plant if you are in a dark basement suite.

Area Rugs

Area rugs can brighten up a space and add a different texture to the room. Try a small brightly colored rug in a small space or a large geometric carpet in your living room. Cover any kind of flooring with an area rug, even carpet!

Room Dividers

Room Dividers are perfect for those who live in a small space or one that is completely open like a bachelor’s suite. Dividers can change the shape of a room and either add a focal point or cover up an unsightly item that you want hidden.

Mirrors

Mirrors have long been one of the most popular design tips for anyone who lives in a small space, and with good reason. They can make a small space look larger because they reflect light. They also add an interesting element to any room. Mirrors can be tiny to huge, with freestanding mirrors fitting into any space nicely.

Pillows

Pillows are an inexpensive way to add some color and personality to your new space. Match them to other visual elements in the room like candles, decorative accents, and throws and your room will look like it belongs in a magazine.

Hide the television

It’s hard to stylize a television. I don’t know many people who don’t have one, but if your space isn’t that big, you may not want the TV to be the focal point of your living room. An armoire can hide the TV while still looking chic.

Storage

Storage that is attractive is the perfect design tip for renters. Often renter’s don’t have enough space for all of their stuff. Dual purpose storage can store your things while also providing seating for your guests.

Outside

If you are fortunate enough to have outside space in your rental home, there is a lot you can do to personalize it. Add a wreath to your front door to throw off a welcoming vibe. Patios or decks can be dressed up like a whole extra room by putting some weather safe furniture, throw pillows, and candle holders.
